  • NEWBURG - Property and real estate taxes for Newburg residents will be due a month earlier than in years past. In June the city's board of alderman approved an ordinance that would have the Phelps County Collector's the handling of these taxes.
Under the agreement with the county, Newburg would pay the collector's office 2 percent of the total amount of property and real estate taxes that the county collects for Newburg. The agreement runs through the end of February 2014 and can be renewed each year. The agreement states that Newburg residents' taxes will be due on Dec. 31, 2013.
County taxes are due on December 31. In making this decision, the board is hoping that while residents are paying their county taxes, people will be reminded to pay their city taxes as well. By having the county collect taxes, it is estimated to save the Newburg about $900 a year. Since 2004, the county has collected city property taxes for both Rolla and St. James.
According to city hall, property tax invoices have already been sent out to Newburg residents.
