USPS issues stamp honoring James Naismith
James a. Naismith was born on November 6, 1861. While working at a YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith invented the game of basketball. After writing the original rulebook for the new sport, he moved to Kansas where he founded the current basketball program at KU.
On the anniversary of his 100th birthday, the USPS issued a commemorative stamp in his honor. Designed by Charles R. Chickering, the first of 109,110,000 stamps were released for sale in Springfield, Massachusetts.
