  • Officials in one of Missouri's largest counties are looking at possible spending cuts after voters rejected a proposed use tax.
The Springfield News-Leader reports the measure on Tuesday's Greene County ballot failed by a margin of 56 percent to 44 percent.
The use tax would have applied the local sales tax to items purchased from outside Missouri but used in the county. Individuals would not have had to report Internet or catalog purchases until they spent more than $2,000 in a single year.
Greene County's expenses are projected to increase by $2.1 million next year, while revenues are expected to grow by only $58,000.
County leaders thought the use tax was the best way to raise revenue without affecting most residents.
