November 5, 1940

FDR wins third term

The Constitution set no presidential term limits but, following George Washington's tradition, no president ever sought a third term--until 1940. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first and only President to do so. On November 5, 1940, FDR was elected President of the United States for the third time.
