  • Missouri S&T senior linebacker Chris Horn, who led the Miners in tackles in their 14-13 victory Saturday over Saint Joseph's, has been named as the Great Lakes Valley Conference's "Defensive Player of the Week".
Horn, who finished the contest with 12 tackles, was part of an overall effort that slowed down one of the league's top offensive units this season. The Pumas entered Saturday's game with averages of 482.3 offensive yards per game, 264 rushing yards per contest and a league-high 33.8 points a game.
The Miner defense held Saint Joseph's to 168 yards on the ground – and just 106 after a 62-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game – 279 yards overall and 13 points. The total yardage and point totals were season lows for the Pumas, as was their 111 yards through the air.
S&T's defensive unit allowed only 13 completions in 33 pass attempts on the afternoon, recorded four quarterback sacks and intercepted four passes – all of them coming in the final 6:37 of the contest with the Miners clinging to a one-point lead. In addition, five of the Pumas' 18 offensive possessions ended with negative yardage.
The award is the second in Horn's career, as he was also honored after S&T's win over Urbana late last season.
The Miners, who improved to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC with Saturday's win, will play Truman State Saturday in Kirksville, Mo. Game time is at 1 p.m.
