  • It was a year in the making but well worth the wait according to Missouri State Highway Patrol Lt. Jim Remillard in reference to a new memorial installed in the conference room of the patrol's Troop I headquarters in Rolla.
The wooden installation honors MSHP troopers who have died in the line of duty over the decades.
The memorial consists of large wood crafted plaques with the phrase "To those who gave the ultimate sacrifice" etched above the patrol's seal.
On both sides of this centerpiece are three rows of photos of 30 patrolmen who have died in the line of duty.
It was put together by students from Rolla Technical Institute (RTI). In the fall of 2012 Remillard approached RTI and the wood manufacturing and construction trades classes and asked if they would be interested in taking on the project.
Robert Studdard, RTI's wood manufacturing instructor, said he liked the idea. He visited the highway patrol's troop headquarters and took some measurements and came up with a design. He and his students worked on it over the course of three semesters.
"The kids did a great job," said Remillard. "We love it."
