  • The crispness of Fall is finally in the air. The leaves are changing color, the sun is setting earlier and pumpkins are for sale in the local marketplaces. These are just the signs of the upcoming holiday season, which is kicked off by Halloween.
On or about Oct. 31, all manner of ghouls, goblins, superheroes and other characters will hit the streets, knocking on doors in search of treats.
Safety must be the No. 1 priority as our little ones venture forward dressed as their favorite personalities. Here are some reminders to consider before walking out the door:
    • Never trick-or-treat alone. Make sure a parent or trusted friend accompanies the revelers, especially the younger ones.
    • Use reflective tape on costumes for better visibility to motorists.
    • Carry a flashlight to help see and be seen.
    • Make sure masks fit tightly with adequate openings for maximum vision.
    • Examine every treat carefully. If there is the slightest doubt of its condition, do not eat it.
    • Don’t enter anyone’s home unless accompanied by an adult.
    • Swords, knives and other weaponry should be of soft material and as short as possible.
    • If you are home giving out treats, consider healthier alternatives to the typical sugar infused candies and snacks, such as fruit-based treats, granola bars, and the like.
