On Saturday Oct. 5, 30 students from five schools showed up at St. James Middle School to play in chess tournaments for grades five through seven and grades eight and nine.
The trophy for the eighth and ninth grade section was won by Cameron Copeland from Rolla Junior High. He had a perfect 4-0 score.
Devin Brown and Jimmy Watkins from St. James Middle School won the second and third place medals, respectively, both with scores of 3-1.
The fifth through seventh grade section trophy was won by Garren Gray from St. James Middle School with a perfect score of 4-0.
Six people had a 3-1 record: Giorgi Tsiklauri from Rolla Middle School and Jehoshua Casey, a homeschooler from Vienna, took the second and third place medals, respectively, on tiebreakers.
The others with 3-1 records were Tristan Lietz, Jacob Walther, Kyle Hill and John Lewis Koenig. John Stratton brought a big contingent from his chess club at the Dent-Phelps R-III school.
Joe Schisler had a similar group from his chess club at the Rolla Middle School. Three from Sullivan also were there. Jeris Walters, the sponsor of the chess club at St. James Middle School, organized the tournament and had a concession stand open for the parents and students. Amy Koenig did the pairings for each round of play. Charles Dare and Selden Trimble acted as tournament directors.
