  • Council approves purchase of trucks

  • The Rolla City Council on Monday night accepted a $20,346 bid from Denny Ford Lincoln for a 2014 Ford F150 to be used as an animal control vehicle.

  • The Rolla City Council on Monday night accepted a $20,346 bid from Denny Ford Lincoln for a 2014 Ford F150 to be used  as an animal control vehicle.
    Police Chief Mark Kearse noted that Joe Machens Ford, Columbia, had a lower bid, $20,228, but it was only $118 lower, and more than that would be spent on fuel and manpower to go get it.
    He recommended the local dealer’s bid and the council agreed.
    The council also accepted of the second lowest bid for a new 20 cubic-yard refuse truck. Sanitation Director Brady Wilson said the $140,313 bid from TCS of Strafford for a Freightliner cab and chassis with a Loadmaster Legacy body was $146 higher than an International, also bid by TCS.
    Wilson said the department has “ongoing problems” with the International truck it has. Annual operating costs are about 25 percent higher than those for the Freightliner, he said. That $146 difference “will easily be saved within the first year,” Wilson said.
    Once the new truck is received, the existing truck will be sold on govdeals.com, likely for at least $20,000, so “the net purchase proice of the new truck (is) approximately $120,000.”
    Wilson recommended, and the council accepted, the low bid of $117,916 for a Freightliner cab and chassis with a Galbreath hoist for the sanitation department. The existing truck a 2004 Freightliner, will be sold on govdeals.com.

    In other business or discussion:
    • The council approved the appointment of Josh Meyer to the Rolla Housing Authority board of commissioners. Meyer is a loan officer at First State Community Bank. He is a graduate of Rolla High School.
    • Councilman Louis Magdits asked why the state Department of Transportation has money to spend replacing “perfectly good sidewalks” along Highway 72 but doesn’t have enough money to fix potholes and pavement ripples correctly on Highway 63. There was no good answer.
    • Councilman Steve Leonard suggested that it is time to appropriate money for a traffic flow study around Rolla Middle School, Mark Twain Elementary School and Rolla Junior High School.
    • City Administrator Butz introduced Zach Woolsey, the Missouri S&T student council liaison to the city council. Woolsey is from St. James.
    • Butz said an animal control workshop will be held Oct. 14. A light meal for council members will be served at 5, with a discussion period open to the public at 5:30 in Council Chambers at City Hall.
    • The wrap-up meeting on the parks and recreation tax will be held from 5:30-7 Oct. 15 at The Centre. Butz said the council likely will formally consider a sales tax at the first meeting in November. An ordinance must be passed by the first meeting in January to get a place on the April ballot.
