  • Phelps County elected officials will not be getting larger paychecks, it was decided Tuesday during the county’s salary commission meeting.
The salary commission, made up of current county elected officeholders, meets in odd-numbered years.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the elected officials present agreed to set the current salary at 100 percent of the current base compensation for the offices of presiding commissioner, recorder of deeds, county clerk, collector, treasurer and prosecuting attorney for their terms beginning Jan. 1, 2015.
    Those salaries are as follows:
    Presiding commissioner — $38,392.80,
Recorder of deeds, county clerk, collector and treasurer — $55,080, and
    Prosecuting Attorney — $116.857.92.
The base salary amounts for elected officials are set in state statute. The prosecuting attorney, as a full-time position, makes the same salary as an associate circuit court judge.
In addition to maintaining the current salaries for the offices, the salary commission also approved cost-of-living increases if the budget allows.
A financial status report prepared by County Clerk Carol Bennett states that sales tax revenue to date this year for Phelps County totals $1,853,923.34, which is 0.86 percent below the same period in 2012 and the assessed valuation for 2013 is $558,934,743, which is an increase of $6,771,990 over 2012.
The report goes on to state that “Phelps County continues to weather slow economic conditions, even dealing with sales tax revenues which continue to remain fairly steady, but show no noticeable increase.”
Elected officials present at the meeting were Presiding Commissioner Randy Verkamp, District One Commissioner Larry Stratman, District Two Commissioner Gary Hicks, County Clerk Carol Bennett, Collector Davis Haas and Treasurer Carol Green.
Absent were Recorder of Deeds Robin Kordes, Assessor Bill Wiggins, Prosecuting Attorney John Beger, Sheriff Rick Lisenbe, Coroner Larry Swinfard and Public Administrator Kathy Oliver.
