Leo Lavon Christopher of Rolla, Missouri passed away Monday, October 7, 2013 at the age of 83.
Leo was born July 14th, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Millie (Bramon) and George Christopher.
Leo attended Rolla High School and University of Missouri where he played varsity basketball.  He played professional baseball five years with such notables as Whitey Herzog and Mickey Mantle.  He also instructed baseball at Don Zimmer’s Baseball School in Florida.  Leo was assistant basketball coach at UMR seven years and introduced the baseball program to UMR.  He was head coach while winning one NAIA championship.  
Leo was elected as Phelps County Assessor six years and Phelps County Collector for sixteen years.  
He won several medals in the Senior Olympics for racquetball and basketball, and won matches in the National Handball Championship Tournament.  Leo was involved with the original committee to get the HUD hi-rise built in Rolla as well as a member of the University of Missouri Extension in Phelps County.  
Leo is survived by his wife of 20 years, Ruth Ann (Hughes) Christopher of Rolla, six children: Kim and Brian Bruders of Pleasant Hill, Keri and William Page of Rolla, Kent Christopher of Rolla, Kurt Christopher of Rolla, Shane and Angela Montgomery of Warrensburg, and Angela and Jeremy Sanders of Holden.  Eight grandchildren: Lindsey, Brooke, Emily, Kameron, Macy Bea, Cody, Ella, and Dalton. Two great-grandchildren: Ahriya and Lakelyn along with many other friends and family.  
In addition to his father and mother, Leo was preceded in death by his infant son Kirk Christopher.  
Funeral services for Leo Christopher will be held Friday October 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Rolla Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary with Pastor Ray Cook officiating. Internment will be at the Rolla City Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday October 10, 2013 from 5PM-8PM. Memorials are suggested to the Missouri S&T baseball program. Cards are available at all James & Gahr locations.
