  • The Missouri S&T volleyball team dug out of some early holes, but was unable to finish in its 3-0 (23-25, 22-25, 23-25) loss at Bellarmine on Sunday.
For the second straight day the Miners (6-6, 2-2 GLVC) found themselves facing an early deficit as they trailed the Knights (7-3, 3-1 GLVC) 6-1 to start the match. S&T began to chip away at the lead and eventually tied it at 14-14 on a service error. The two teams' swapped points before Bellarmine regained the lead on a service error and stretched the lead out to 22-19. The Miners fought back to tie the set at 23-all on an attack error, but kills by Lucy Heidrich and Ashley Jefferson gave the opening set to the Knights 25-23.
S&T found itself facing an early deficit again in the second set as Bellarmine raced out to a six point lead. Just like in the opening set the Miners responded going on a 6-0 run to tie the set at 16, but couldn't get over the hump as the Knights scored the next two to regain the lead. S&T continued to battle evening the set at 20-20, but Bellarmine countered with three straight points to regain the lead. Gracey Moon kept the Miners alive recording a kill on the first set point, but Jefferson ended the set on the next swing to give the Knights the 2-0 lead.
S&T held a three-point lead in set three and was the first to reach 20 points leading 20-18, but Bellarmine closed out the set scoring seven of the last 10 points to win the match.
The Miners recorded 39 kills in the match and finished with an attack percentage of .170. Krista Haslag led the way with 10 kills while Moon added eight and Holly Tarvin contributed seven. Allie Plunk had 28 assists while Cydney Denning had 14 digs. S&T finished the match with seven blocks.
The Miners return home tonight to face the Jennies of Central Missouri beginning at 6 p.m.
