  • City officials next week will start a series of outdoor meetings to talk about a quarter-cent sales tax for parks and recreation.
"It's time for us to do a little road show," Parks and Recreation Director Scott Caron told the Rolla City Council Monday night.
Caron said there will be meetings next week and the following week with a wrap-up session in mid-October. All meetings are scheduled for 5:30-7 p.m.
The first meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 23, at the SplashZone Pavilion for voters in Wards 1 and 2. If the weather is bad, the meeting will be held at The Centre.
Then on Tuesday, Sept. 24, voters in Wards 3 and 4 are invited to a meeting at Green Acres Park Pavilion. If the weather is bad, the meeting will be held in the Carpenters Hall.
The following week, on Monday, Sept. 30, Wards 5 and 6 voters will meet at Buehler Park Pavilion. Weather could force the meeting into the chamber office.
Caron said he and other officials will present the needs of the parks and recreation department and will propose a sales tax to be voted on in April.
On Tuesday, Oct. 15, the comments received at the meeting will be reported at a wrap-up meeting at The Centre for all city voters.
Up for discussion at the ward/neighborhood meetings will be the financial status of The Centre, the need for more money to perform maintenance and the need to replace or add equipment in the parks.
The half-cent sales tax used to pay off the bonds to build The Centre will expire at the end of this year.
Likely to be presented on the April ballot is a question to voters about adopting a quarter-cent sales tax to be a permanent revenue stream for the new parks and recreation department.
