  • County officials and contractors gathered Thursday at the Beaver Creek bridge on County Road 5240 south of Rolla for a dedication ceremony. The bridge has been open to traffic since early April.
The new 80-foot structure replaces a low lying concrete slab that according to Phelps County Presiding Commissioner Randy Verkamp was in constant need of repair.
The bridge serves as a connector between U.S. Route 63 and State Route O. The project was scheduled to be completed in November of last year. However, a higher than anticipated slope was noticed during the initial construction and work had to be done to fix that.
"We had our issues but we resolved those issues and came up with a good quality product that should serve the county well," said Spencer Jones of Great River Associates who were the designers of the bridge.
Eighty percent of the funding came from the Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Program, a federally funded program which helps structures that are not on the state highway system. Brenneke Construction was the general contractor for the project which cost close to $300,000.
Verkamp summed up the small gathering best. He said, "Our hope as county commissioners is to facilitate improvements that endure. We hope that this is one of those that makes a difference."
