10-minute stretch dooms Miners Sunday night.
A 10-minute stretch doomed Missouri S&T's men's soccer team Sunday night, as Lindenwood scored three times during that span to break what was a scoreless tie and went on to a 3-0 win in the final game of the GLVC-MIAA Classic at the S&T Soccer Field.
After a scoreless first half, one in which the Lions outshot the Miners 12-5 and had six shots on net turned away by S&T goalkeeper James Holloway, Lindenwood was able to break on top at the 64:52 mark when Hernan Gonzalez headed in a cross from Mauricio Medina.
Less than four minutes later, Ignacio Romero was awarded a penalty kick when he went down in the box and converted the attempt to extend the lead to 2-0, then Aris Nukic scored the third goal off an assist from Romero with 74:12 gone for the final tally of the night.
The Miners were outshot by a 20-5 margin for the night and had three shots on goal to 11 for Lindenwood, who was picked to win the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title this season and went 2-0 in the weekend classic.
Carlos Gomez had two shots for Missouri S&T, who will take a 1-1 record into its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Friday at defending league champion Rockhurst. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo.
