  • Judge Mary Sheffield, an appellate judge from Rolla, sat Wednesday morning by special designation with the Supreme Court of Missouri.
Sheffield was sitting in place of Judge George W. Draper III, who was recused from one case.
“Judge Sheffield was a welcome colleague on the court for oral arguments today,” Chief Justice Mary R. Russell said. “We are fortunate to have judges from all levels of the court system so talented and willing to assist when the court needs special judges to sit due to recusals or the absence of our judges.”
Sheffield heard the first case on the court’s docket Wednesday morning: Case No. SC92615, David A. McNeal v. State of Missouri, a proceeding regarding a request for post-conviction relief.
Sheffield was appointed to the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District, in December of 2012.
Prior to her appointment, Sheffield served as presiding judge of the 25th Circuit Court, which covers Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Texas counties. She was elected to the 25th Circuit in November 2004 and again in 2010.
Sheffield earned her bachelor’s of arts from North Carolina State University and her law degree from the University of Miami Law School. She served as associate circuit judge from 1982 until her election as circuit judge in 2004.
Prior to her election, Sheffield worked in private practice in Rolla and Salem.
She is a member of the National College of Probate Judges, Blue Ridge Institute for Juvenile and Family Law Judges, the National Association of Women Judges, the National Guardianship Association, the Supreme Court Judicial Education Committee, chairwoman of the Family Court Committee.
Sheffield is also a member of the American, Missouri and Phelps County Bar associations, as well as the First United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, PEO and The Community Partnership.
