Lady Wolves in championship game of Frisco League Tourney.
The third-seeded Newburg High School softball team advanced to the championship game of the Frisco League Tournament by defeating second-seeded host Crocker 6-2 on Thursday.
Newburg was scheduled to play top-seeded Iberia on Friday (Sept. 6) in the league title game.
On Thursday the Lady Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning and led the rest of the way. Newburg added two more runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh.
Senior pitcher Shelby Friend tossed a two-hitter for Newburg, with both Crocker runs being unearned.
Shelby Friend had a triple, double, two runs scored and an RBI for the winners while Seeley Friend, Courtney Suschanke and Audrey Suschanke each had a hit and RBI.
"Definitely a pitcher's duel," said Newburg head coach Andrew Lott. "Shelby was in control from the beginning, setting them down in order for the first three innings and we were lucky enough to put a big three-spot up on them in the first.
"Defense was pretty solid for both teams the entire night. We did have a few mishaps fielding the ball, but it happens with a young team. We picked our heads up and finished the game out strong.
