  • NEWBURG—Highway damage caused by recent flooding in Phelps County has resulted in the cancellation of the remainder of the Lyric Live Theater's 2013 season.
Managing director Carrolyn Bolin said the closing of Highway T through Aug. 30 will make it too difficult for theater-goers to get to Newburg.
"We had shows scheduled for this Friday and Saturday night and next Friday and Saturday night, but we're going to have to cancel them," she said.
A circuitous route into Newburg is certainly possible, but Bolin said most people probably would choose not to make that long drive.
Also canceled is a Sept. 1 matinee show by Bob Milne, ragtime pianist.
"The highway is scheduled to be open by then, but there's no guarantee it will be," Bolin said. Weather or other factors could result in a delay of the repair of the cave-in of the pavement, so it seemed prudent to cancel the show.
Bolin said she and the performers are disappointed, but they are looking forward to next season.
"We'll be back next year," she said.
The ground under Highway T, just north of County Road 7290, liquefied and slid down the hill. Rebuilding the road became necessary. Don Schnieders Excavating of Jefferson City bid $107,723.30 and was awarded the contract.
