  • ST. JAMES — In the wake of catastrophic flooding along the Big Piney and Gasconade rivers in Phelps County, the Meramec Regional Community Foundation (MRCF) established the Phelps County Flood Relief Fund.
The St. James Ambulance District and Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) provided seed money for the fund.
The ambulance district helped kick off the fund drive with a $1,206 donation raised by district staff who pumped gas, washed windshields and solicited donations at Mobil on the Run in St. James last weekend.
In addition, MRPC added $221 to the fund through donations from MRPC board members and staff.
As the floodwaters begin to recede, the affected residents and communities are beginning to assess the damage done to their homes, roads, bridges, community buildings and other infrastructure.
All donations made to this fund are dedicated to flood relief efforts in Phelps County, including the hard-hit communities of Jerome and Newburg.
Flooding from a creek that runs through Newburg caused damage to the small town. In Jerome, the Gasconade River swelled over Interstate 44 last week and swallowed several homes in the rural, unincorporated community.
Fund proceeds will address individual and community needs created by this flood event in Phelps County through established, local non-profit groups, religious organizations, schools and county and local governments of Phelps County.
All donations are tax deductible and can be made online or by check. People wishing to donate online may do so by visiting the Community Foundation of the Ozarks website at cfozarks.org and clicking the “Give Online” button. Enter “Phelps County Flood Relief Fund” in the field for the fund or program to donate.
For those wishing to donate by check, make checks payable to Phelps County Flood Relief Fund and mail or drop off checks to Meramec Regional Community Foundation, 4 Industrial Drive, St. James, MO 65559.
    Pulaski County
A similar fund has been established for Pulaski County, and the MRCF is now accepting applications to receive flood relief assistance funds in Pulaski County.
MRCF created the Pulaski County Flood Relief Fund on Aug. 7 in response to catastrophic flooding that had deeply impacted communities and residents of Pulaski County – especially in the Waynesville area.
Creation of the fund was aided by a $2,500 seed grant from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks  and fundraising efforts have continued since.
Non-profit groups, schools or religious organizations who have a need for funding to assist the communities or individuals affected by recent flooding in Pulaski County are encouraged to apply for assistance.
Applications may be obtained by contacting MRCF administrator Maria Bancroft at 573-265-2993 or mbancroft@meramecregion.org.
Individuals are not eligible to apply directly to MRCF for assistance. A local committee with Pulaski County representation will make grant decisions.
Page 2 of 2 - “Once we know what groups and agencies will be receiving funds and how they intend to use those funds, we will share that information so individuals and families in need can contact those groups as appropriate,” Bancroft explained.
Donations to this fund will continue to be accepted as these communities move into cleanup efforts. All donations are tax deductible and dedicated to flood relief efforts in Pulaski County.
The St. James Ambulance District also collected paper products and non-perishable food items that were donated to Pulaski County flood relief efforts.
