Jeanice Irene Powell passed away Saturday August 10th 2013 at the age of 75.
She was born on September 5th 1937 to the late Leslie Sherrick and Emma (Wilson) Sherrick. She was a 1955 graduate of John F Hodge High School in St James, MO.
She was united in marriage to Bob Powell on August 18th 1956 and to this union one son was born.
Jeanice worked as a cartographer at the USGS, retiring in 1992 with 30 years of service.
She was a member of Oak Meadow Country Club and she also served as past president of the Rolla Jaycee-ettes as well as past president of the Rolla Lioness Club. She was a member of St James Christian Church and her Christian faith was evident in her love and service to others during her time on this earth. Jeanice was a multi-talented individual and she always excelled at her endeavors:
As a student, she was consistently at the top of the honor roll in high school and she ended up graduating as Salutatorian of her class.
As a model employee in her 30 year career at the USGS, she was cited for awards on many occasions.
As a cook there were few equals and many of the dishes that she concocted over the years were her very own special recipes.
As an avid bowler, her average consistently ranked near the top for women keglers in the area. Her strongest legacy in this sport, though, is that fact that she served as youth coach for many years in the sixties when youth leagues originally formed in the Rolla area. Some of the finest bowlers Rolla ever produced were taught by her when they first picked up a bowling ball as a child.
As a golfer, even after only taking up the sport in her late 30’s, Jeanice became one of the better women golfers in the area. In fact, she shot par on a number of holes while playing a round with her grand-daughter Lara just a week before her passing.
As a knitter, some of her original creations are true works of art, especially her snowflake Christmas tree ornaments.
Jeanice also, especially enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles, as well as having many other interest too numerous to mention.
Of course, one could go on and on about the virtues of their own mother, and yet, those her knew her well would be in one accord of Jeanice being one remarkable lady and she will be greatly missed.
Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her: step-father Clarence Happel; uncle Earl Wilson; niece Brenda Happel and grandson Chris Campbell, both tragically killed as the result of car accidents at a young age.
Those left to mourn Jeanice’s passing are her: husband Bob Powell of Rolla, MO; son Rick Powell of Rolla; brother Ben Sherrick and wife Hilda of St James, MO; brother Pete Happel and wife Betty of Walla-Walla, WA; brother in-law Don Powell of Chicago, Ill; sister in-law Doris (Powell) Whites of Galion, OH; former daughter in-laws Sharon Powell of Issaquah, WA; Jarena Fleischman of Rolla and Lisa Strauser of Rolla; nieces Susan (Sherrick) Benson and husband Randy of Rolla, and Patty (Happel) Wahring and husband Robert of Walla-Walla, WA; grand-daughters Rene (Campbell) Price and husband Rex of Snoqualmie, WA; Elizabeth Young of St Louis, MO; Ashley (Hoffman) Campbell and husband Ronnie of Rolla; Bethany Powell and Lara Powell of Rolla.
