  • A 30-year-old woman delivered a newborn baby at a local hospital after being stabbed in the stomach at Road Ranger Truck Stop early Wednesday morning, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department.
28-year-old Mark A. Downing, the man accused of stabbing the woman, is being held behind bars on two counts of first-degree assault.
Both the woman and the baby suffered stab wounds.
According to the sheriff's department, the 30-year-old woman and a male acquaintance were arguing in the parking lot of the truck stop, located at 22345 Highway 28 in St. Robert, where the suspect stabbed the pregnant victim in her stomach.
The woman was then rushed to the hospital, where the baby was delivered by cesarean section and also treated for a stab wound. At this time, both mother and baby are recovering well in a local hospital, according to the sheriff's department.
The victim was in her ninth month of pregnancy when the incident occurred.
Downing was arrested shortly after the incident occurred, after a brief altercation with deputies.
Downing is currently being held in the Pulaski County Jail, and his bond has been set at $1 million.
