Police surrounded the Hampton Inn on N. Bishop early Monday afternoon in response to a call concerning a suicidal female. The 32-year-old woman had barricaded herself into the bathroom of the first floor room that she had been staying in with family.
According to Rolla Police Chief Mark Kearse, the woman had been dealing with some delusional issues when she locked herself into the bathroom armed with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun threatening to kill herself.
Law enforcement officials from the Phelps County Sheriff's office and the Missouri State Patrol assisted local police in setting up a perimeter and clearing the hotel of guests and workers while establishing negotiations with the woman.
Chief Kearse said that the department's negotiating team were able to set up a phone outside the bathroom while they stationed themselves in the room next door. The woman did not respond to repeated requests to talk for over an hour. It was around 1 p.m. when the police heard the bathroom door open and the sound of her removing the clip from the hand gun. She then tossed the gun out into the hotel hallway and surrendered without incident.
She was taken out of the hotel on an ambulance stretcher and transported to Phelps County Hospital.
