  • Rolla City Council will conduct a workshop on parks and recreation funding this afternoon and evening.
That is what City Administrator John Butz announced at the close of the July 15 council meeting.
Butz said the evening would begin with a light supper for the council members at 5 p.m. this afternoon. The discussion would get underway around 5:30.
Butz said the purpose of the workshop would be to discuss parks and recreation funding.
There is no notice of the workshop on the city's events calendar on its website.
Whether it will be held at Council Chambers or The Centre or elsewhere was not clear.
Parks and recreation funding has been discussed several times at other meetings and workshops.
The city's half-cent recreation sales tax, adopted in 1998 to raise money to pay off the bonds sold to raise money to build The Centre and SplashZone ends Dec. 31 of this year.
The recreation center does not bring in enough money to operate each year to operate without a subsidy.
The council and administration want to end that subsidy to make more money available for police and fire.
An attempt to replace the recreation tax with a parks department tax that would fund the recreation center and the parks department failed at the polls a couple of years ago.
Butz said it is likely voters will be asked again in the spring of 2014 for a parks department tax.
