  • The Phelps County Fair will be back in town. The four-day event kicks off Wednesday, July 31, and runs until Saturday, Aug. 3. This year will mark the 66th year for the fair held at the fairgrounds on Highway 63 south of Rolla.
New to the fairgrounds this year is the "Remembering Our Fallen," a photo memorial of Missouri's soldiers who have died in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars since Sept. 11, 2011.
The exhibit, which is designed to travel through Missouri, has Phelps County Fair Board Vice President Renae Silvio excited.
"I think that it is something that will touch everyone," she told the Daily News.
The 20-year Fair Board veteran is also enthusiastic about the Diaper Derby back for its second year. The crawl takes place Friday night, Aug. 2, at the Midway.
It will be a homecoming of sorts for local rockers Special 20. Cousins Jason Evans and Welsey Wilfong grew up in the Ozark hills. Their blend of country, rock and blues have been lighting up crowds for more than 12 years now. They will be the main music act on Saturday, Aug. 3.
Also headlining this year is 7 Bridges Road, which will perform a tribute to the music of the Eagles. They will take to the stage on Friday, Aug. 2.
The ever popular Phelps County Fair rodeo also will be on Friday night. The Midwest Cowboys Rodeo Company's  presentation of Bulls, Broncos and Barrels Bash will include barrel racing, saddlebroncs and bull riding among other events.
Silvio also is pleased to announce that the Poor Boys Garden Tractor Pull is making a return to the fairgrounds. Beginners and veterans riding mowers are welcomed to strut their skills Saturday night in a variety of stock and modified classes.
She also noted the At Your Service Limousine is offering free shuttle service from the Walmart parking lot at 500 South Bishop to the fairgrounds each day of the event.
