  • Sufficient gallons of water are being lost each year by the Rolla Municipal Utilities water department that a leak study was commissioned this summer.
“Our losses are higher than industry standards,” said RMU General Manager Rodney Bourne, who added that he’s started to think such studies ought to be conducted annually, at least for a few years.
The leak study conducted by ADS Environmental Services began July 8 and was expected to take at least three weeks.
Bourne said no final information is available yet, but should be soon, perhaps in time for the next meeting of the Board of Public Works.
“We did it three years ago,” Bourne said of a leak study, so this is the second such study.
One problem discovered at that time was the copper service lines, so “we’re thinking the quality of copper might not be up to par.”
Bourne said ADS will look at every water main in the city. Once the study is completed, RMU workers will begin making repairs.
Although the study will cost around $25,000, Bourne says it’s worth it. Finding all the leaks and repairing them will cut losses and “it will pay for itself.”
