This summer the Leola Millar Children's Library took on a new look. The library was extremely fortunate to have members from Fine Linen Drama and Missouri S&T Art in the Community students transform the walls of the children's library into a magical place. Both groups painted beautiful murals to be enjoyed by youth for years to come. The library is very appreciative and impressed by the hard work and artistic talent of both teams, not to mention the hours they selflessly donated to create such a treasure for our community.
Over the past few months, the Rolla library was awarded four grants, nonfiction collection makeover, summer reading program collection development and summer library program grant, totaling $13,315. Supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of Secretary of State, a portion of the grant funding enabled the library to purchase more than 455 new books to add to our children and youth collections. The new books strongly support STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) as well as addressing readers' ability levels and interests. New books are on display in the children's library for easy access by our patrons.
We are pleased to offer preschool story time twice weekly in the children's library. Our program is designed to introduce children from 3 to 5 years of age to the library. Regular activities include music, singing, finger plays, and of course stories! While story time targets preschool age children, parents and children of all ages are welcome to attend. Story times are offered Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, September through April.
The children's library also offers a family story time every Thursday evening, September through April. Regular activities include stories, crafts, movies or playing board games. Throughout the year, themed events such as our Back to School Night, Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss and Civil War Stories invite families to attend. Children of all ages are welcome to come enjoy these free activities.
Teens have found a home at the library as well. Our Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is growing and the library values its contributions. The members have become "ambassadors" for the library, learning about the many resources the library offers and communicating that knowledge to their families and friends. They serve as a resource to improve the library's teen services, take part in community service projects, and have a great time together. TAG meets the third Thursday each month, September through April.
Our Summer Reading Program offers something for everyone from infants to adults. Summer weeks are filled with numerous educational programs that are an easy and fun way for parents to keep children engaged in the world of books. The library has had tremendous community support from numerous individuals, businesses and organizations recognizing the role that summer reading plays in reinforcing literacy. The Rolla library's summer program grows each year, and we are happy to provide an environment where our community can be entertained and educated at the same time.
