Cecil Goforth, a longtime St. James resident was named Senior Companion of the Month for July 2013 during the monthly in-service meeting held July 18 at Benchmark Healthcare of Rolla.

Cecil Goforth, a longtime St. James resident was named Senior Companion of the Month for July 2013 during the monthly in-service meeting held July 18 at Benchmark Healthcare of Rolla.


Benchmark Healthcare provided lunch for the Senior Companions as well as entertainment by the 399th Army Band, and tours of the newly-remodeled facility.


As a Senior Companion, Goforth works at the Missouri Veterans Home in St. James, where he listens to residents talk about their lives and assists with playing games, mealtimes and field trips.


Goforth grew up in Eminence area with four brothers and four sisters and now lives in St James. He was a truck driver before retirement.


Goforth has four children and 13 grandchildren. He enjoys playing music, hunting, sightseeing and watching his favorite shows on TV.


As the Senior Companion of the month of March, Goforth received a floral arrangement donated by Blossom Basket Florist, and the recognition of his fellow Senior Companions during the meeting.


There are more than 70 senior citizen volunteers serving as Senior Companions all over Phelps County in private homes, residential care facilities and skilled nursing facilities.


Sponsored by the Phelps County Commission, the Corporation for National and Community Service, as well as several local groups and individuals, Senior Companions help their peers maintain the independence they have worked for all their lives.
