St. James Chamber of Commerce Director Dawn Thompson recently announced that she would resign her position effective Aug. 2.
Thompson, who joined the chamber in September of last year, said Tuesday that she was returning to nursing, but her time spent with the chamber was a great experience.
"I love the chamber job," said Thompson. "I haven't found any negatives to be honest, and I've had to learn a few things, but I think we've made a few changes that are positive and are moving forward. It's not a job that comes with a lot of stress, and if you work well with people it's a great job."
Thompson accepted a position as an LPN with Mercy Spine Center in Rolla. Formerly employed with Mercy, she also worked as a school nurse in Rolla and St. James prior to working at the chamber.
"I felt this was the best thing for my family," she said. "We've had some changes, and we're setting new goals for the future.
"I'm really excited about it, and I feel like I'll be able to use my gifts," she added. "When you find out what your gifts are, you feel like you need to use them the way God wants you to."
Although she is confident she is headed in the right direction, her experience with the chamber will not be forgotten.
"I love the job and all the great people in St. James," she said. "I can't stress enough how much the Chamber of Commerce membership does for the City of St. James. We would have nothing if it weren't for the membership in the chamber, because all of that is supported by the membership.
"It's a great community to be a part of and I don't think people realize where that all comes from, and I don't think I really paid attention until I got here."
The chamber is currently accepting applications for the position of chamber director.
A director must be a self-motivated individual to direct, organize, and oversee local chamber events.
Qualifications include good communication skills, along with computer and budgeting experience.
Applications may be picked up at the St. James Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Center, located at 100 State Route B in St. James.
