Honored by USA College Football.
Five members of Missouri S&T's football team have earned early recognition as members of the USA College Football preseason All-America team for NCAA Division II.
USA College Football is a division of the USA Football Network, Inc., and covers the sport at the small college level on a nationwide basis.
The five Miners selected to the team were senior defensive tackle Eddie Rascon (Canutillo, Texas/Canutillo), linebackers Chris Horn (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington) and Chris Emesih (Houston, Texas/Westfield) and defensive ends Jimmy Barnhart (Union, Mo./Union) and Freddy Dugard (Queens Village, N.Y./St. Francis Prep). The quintet was among 31 players in the Great Lakes Valley Conference mentioned on the preseason squad.
Rascon, who earned All-America honors last season from Beyond Sports Network and who is a member of that outlet's preseason squad for 2013, was 10th in NCAA Division II last season with 13 quarterback sacks – the Miners finished with a school record 45 for the year – and also had 44 tackles overall on the year. A first-team All-GLVC selection a year ago, Rascon was a first-team selection on the USA squad, while Horn, a senior linebacker, was chosen to the second team.
Horn is coming off a season in which he recorded 44 tackles and three interceptions to land on the All-GLVC first team. He was named to the USA College Football second team for the preseason, while his running mate at linebacker, Emesih, earned honorable mention All-GLVC honors after a year in which he led the Miners in tackles with 68.
Emesih, who is also entering his senior year at S&T, was named honorable mention on the preseason squad as were the two senior defensive ends that were chosen.
Dugard finished the 2012 season with 45 tackles and 11 sacks, while Barnhart had seven sacks among the 27 tackles he finished the season with. Dugard was named to the All-GLVC second team and Barnhart earned honorable mention status on the all-conference team.
The Miners are scheduled to report August 11 for the start of preseason practice and will open the season Sept. 5 at home against Chadron State.
