Goldie Masterson, of Edgar Springs, has been named Senior Companion of the Month for June 2013.
As a Senior Companion, Masterson visits several area residents in their homes each week to help them with basic household tasks and with transportation to doctors' appointments and errands.
She also serves each week at the Presbyterian Manor, where she visits residents and helps with activities.
Masterson is originally from the Kansas City/Independence area, and she enjoys reading, birdwatching and gardening. Before becoming a Senior Companion, she worked as a retail cashier and in security in southern California.
She became a Senior Companion in 2002, and she says she really enjoys listening to her clients' stories – how they grew up and what they did in their lives.
As the Senior Companion of the Month, Masterson received a floral arrangement and the recognition of her fellow Senior Companions at the monthly in-service held June 20 at the Phelps County Courthouse.
There are more than 70 senior citizen volunteers serving as Senior Companions all over Phelps County in private homes, residential care facilities and skilled nursing facilities.
Sponsored by the Phelps County Commission, the Corporation for National and Community Service, as well as several local groups and individuals, Senior Companions help their peers maintain the independence they have worked for all their lives.
If you know a Phelps County resident who might benefit from the services of a Senior Companion, contact 573-458-6180 for further information.
