After first week of Rolla High School Football Camp.

Rolla High School football coaches were pleased with the turnout for the first week of the RHS Football Camp.

The two-week camp, for kids entering grades 8-12, began on Monday and ran through Friday. It will resume this coming week.

There were 62 high school campers this week – 18 seniors, 17 juniors and 27 sophomores. The freshman camp attracted 32 campers and there were 36 eighth-graders.

"The numbers are very good," said Willie Howard, entering his third season as RHS head coach. "Actually we had to order three more large helmets because we didn't have enough. That's a great problem to have.

"In particular we're really pleased with the number of sophomores we have out."

After the Bulldog Camp is finished, the players will have a couple of weeks to rest up before the official start of fall practice. The first day Missouri prep fall sports teams can practice is Monday, Aug. 12.

Rolla's first practice will be from 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 12. Classes begin in Rolla schools on Aug. 14.

Howard said the squad had a productive off-season.

"We had great participation in the off-season," he said. "A lot of the linemen are taking full advantage of the weight room and are getting stronger. And the skill guys picked up a lot in the 7-on-7 league."

Rolla returns seven offensive starters and five defensive starters from last season's 2-9 squad.

One of the new starters will be at quarterback, where senior Joe Drallmeier and sophomore Kyle Morris will be vying for the starting nod.

"Between Drallmeier and Morris both are doing a good job of trying to win the position," Howard said. "Both bring different things to the table, which makes it really difficult (to decide)."

Also back after being hampered most of the season with an ankle injury is junior running back Andy Satulla. Howard hopes to key the team's option game around the rushing talents of Satulla.

Leading the charge on defense is returning all-state lineman Jacob Banholzer, a senior. Three new linebackers must fill starting positions for the Bulldog defense.

BULLDOG NOTES: Howard's high school coaching staff this season will include holdovers Karl Odenwald, Perry Rice, Joe Schuchardt and Reggie McElroy and newcomer Tim Webster, a former player at both St. James High School and Missouri S&T.

Howard will coach quarterbacks, running backs and serve as offensive coordinator while Odenwald and Schuchardt will be co-defensive coordinators. Odenwald will coach defensive backs, Schuchardt linebackers, McElroy offensive linemen and Webster defensive linemen.

In addition, former RHS standout player Robbie Pettijohn will be working with the squad as a volunteer coach.

For the second straight year the Bulldogs will participate in the St. Clair Jamboree. This year's jamboree will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23.

Rolla will officially open its season Aug. 30 at Lebanon in Ozark Conference action (7 p.m.). The Bulldogs' first game on their new synthetic turf will be Sept. 6 against league foe Springfield Kickapoo (7 p.m.).
