  • About four months after taking the position, the fire chief of the Rolla Rural Fire Protection District has resigned, according to the the fire district’s board chairman.
Walter Williams submitted his letter of resignation Wednesday, July 10, said fire board chairman Bill Mason.
When Williams was contacted by phone Monday afternoon, he said, “The reason I resigned was that even though I was upfront with my goals and plans of action, the (fire) board and I didn’t see eye to eye on the daily operations of how the department should be run. Therefore, I stepped down.”
Mason said the board has not accepted the chief’s resignation yet, but that it would likely do so at the board’s Aug. 14 meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the fire district’s headquarters on Lions Club Drive.
Williams was appointed as the district’s fire chief effective March 13, 2013. As fire chief, Williams also worked for the Webster Groves Fire Department, where he said he will continue to work.
Williams is the second fire chief to resign from the district since the fall of 2012.

Before Williams, Jeremy Light had served as interim chief since Sept. 13, 2012.
Light was appointed to the position by the fire board after the previous chief Bruce Southard resigned for personal reasons.
Southard had served as fire chief of the rural district since 1999.
