From noon to 3 p.m., Smuttynose’s Director of Brewing Operations, David Yarrington, and Jess Rice, Smuttynose’s Western New England field manager will be on hand, during the release. During the release, people will have a chance to win a Smuttynose Unicycle.
This is the second beer brewed by Smuttynose, exclusively for Julio’s. The other was several batches of Ry(e)an Ale. Like Ry(e)an, the Fashionably Old Ale is aged in barrels from Julio’s.
Here’s the description from Julio’s: “With the Ry(e)an Ale based around the idea of rye whiskey, we pursued a similar tact and based our next recipe around the idea of an old fashion cocktail. Made with rich malts and Belgian Candi Syrup we then added a mix of sweet and bitter orange peels into the whirlpool. The finished beer then heading into the oak for 9 months. Big and bold, this beer has complexity to spare. With hints of strawberry and orangecoming from the Belgian Candi Syrup and orange peels There’s also notes of vanilla, toffee and dark fruits from the malt and oak barrels. At 11.4% ABV there’s no need to rush the enjoyment of this beer Our suggestion is to add 2 or 3 dashes of your favorite orange bitters to a snifter before gently pouring some Fashionably Old Ale on top. A quick swirl should be sufficient for blending. Then don a comfortable smoking jacket, slick back your Brylcreem’d hair and enjoy. 11.4% ABV | 20 IBU | Malts: 2-Row Pale, Pale Ale Malt, Crystal 15, Aromatic Malt, CaraRed, Amber Candi Syrup, Sweet and Bitter Orange Peels | Hops: Sterling for both bittering and flavor additions | Yeast: American Ale Yeast Aged in various American Whiskey barrels.”
I don’t know about you, but this sounds excellent to me. I think I’ll be making a stop to get a bottle or four.
