  • So, was Andrea Zalis saying farewell to high school basketball or hello to the college game when she took the court as part of the 19th annual Gerald Pilz & Friends All-Star Games over the weekend?
A little of both, she said.
"I view it kind of the ending of high school and the start of college," said Zalis, whose mom, dad and brother took a break from a family camping trip to come to the Branson area for the Pilz event Saturday night. "Because a lot of the players (in the all-star game) are going on to play college basketball as well."
The former two-sport star from Rolla High School represented the Lady Bulldogs for the final time on Saturday night, playing for the white team in a defeat to the red squad in the Pilz All-Star Girls' Game.
The Pilz All-Star Games showcased some of the top boys' and girls' basketball seniors of the 2012-13 season from southwest Missouri as well as other areas.
After deliberating for several months, Zalis finally chose to play basketball in college rather than softball. She set a slew of records for the Lady Bulldog softball team as part of the winningest senior class in that program's history.
Zalis will play women's basketball for Westminster College, where her brother, Jay, is a member of the men's basketball squad.
She earned All-Ozark Conference and All-Central District honors last season in basketball, averaging 15.3 points and 8.0 rebounds as a 5-8 forward for the Lady Bulldogs.
And her schedule to work on her game has eased up dramatically without the extended time she had put in on traveling softball summer teams the past several years.
Now, Zalis can concentrate solely on basketball.
"Almost every Sunday we have open gyms at Westminster," Zalis said. "And I've got summer workouts and I'll be playing ball with my brother.
"I'm ready to start now. I'm very excited about college."
