A soldier stationed at Fort Leonard Wood was killed in an ATV accident on the Fourth of July and another soldier was seriously injured after being ejected from the ATV into the Big Piney River in Pulaski County.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, Timothy J. Panzar, 25, of St. Robert, was driving the 1983 Yamaha ATV northbound on Hartford Road, one mile north of State Highway 28, when the ATV went off the right side of the road.
The ATV went airborne, struck a tree and overturned before coming to a rest in the Big Piney River. Panzar and another soldier riding on the ATV, identified as Erik D. Kolbow, 33, of Fort Leonard Wood, were both ejected from the vehicle into the river.
Panzar was pronounced dead by Pulaski County Coroner Mikel Hartness. Kolbow was airlifted to Mercy Hospital Springfield for serious injuries.
The crash happened at 2:34 a.m.
A spokesman for Fort Leonard Wood told KOLR-TV that both men were currently assigned to the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.
This marks the first fatality in July in the MSHP Troop I area, which covers six counties in south central Missouri. This is 10th fatality this year in the Troop I area.
