  • Students at Rolla Middle School were elated last week as they witnessed the first phase of their playground area begin.
Rolla Asphalt donated thousands of dollars in labor and materials to the project, so that the students would have more asphalt for their play area.
The main goal of the new area is to provide students with an area for  physical activity outside. Previously they played in the school’s parking lot.
“We have been overwhelmed by the community support for this project,” said RMS Principal Monica Davis. “Rolla Asphalt went above and beyond our expectations by doing both the excavation and laying the asphalt. It is so great to have our local businesses helping us out with our projects.”
Students and parents helped to raise money this past school year to begin the project. Some of the funds raised by students will help pay for a small portion of the materials for the asphalt, new tether balls, basketball goals, new balls, jump ropes and other items.
RMS plans to add additional increments of equipment in the next several years. This upcoming year, school officials hope to add more fitness equipment that will be appropriate for the age of the students.
“We have been working on this project since earlier this year, because a project of this size does not happen overnight. We worked to raise the money, seek donations and finish up the first phase," said Jodi Elder, assistant principal.
“It's hard to believe how excited our students have been to hear about our plans and to see Rolla Asphalt out in our front yard working in 90-plus degree weather. We were especially excited because our students and parents helped plan the area by sharing ideas and suggestions.
“We all were concerned with the issue of safety with our students playing in a parking lot that also served as a place for our parents to come in and out. This truly has been a collaborative project,” Elder said.
Other major contributors to the project have been Champions of Rolla Education (CORE), Walmart Distribution Center and many other individual parents who donated to the project.
