  • You’ve probably heard about turning water into wine, but how about turning wine into water?
That’s what will happen Saturday evening, July 20, when profits from a 5K run sponsored by Meramec Vineyards of St. James will go to two organizations that are helping to bring water to communities in Guatemala, Honduras and Bolivia.
Both the Student Chapter of Engineers Without Borders of the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla and the New Mayas Society will receive the profits from this race.
These organizations are involved with multi-year projects to solve water projects in four communities.
The Missouri S&T chapter of the Engineers Without Borders thought the idea of a winery sponsoring a 5K to support bringing water to these poor communities was a good twist on the biblical miracle.
This chip-timed 5K begins at 6:30 p.m. and the route will go from Meramec Vineyards’ winery building (located at 600 Highway B) to the vineyard where the grapes are grown.
Participants will go from there to an open field where there will be the presentation of awards and music by the Little Piney Hellbenders.
Wine, beer, drinks and food by Moose BBQ will be for sale. Free shuttles will be provided to carry people back to the winery from after the race until 10 p.m.
Participants can run/jog/walk the 5K. Each participant will receive a race T-shirt.
Awards will be given to the top three in each age group and special prizes to overall male and female first-and second-place winners, team and costume (single or group).

The entry fee is $36 before the race by registering online at http://split-secondtiming.com/upcoming-events or www.meramecvineyards.com/events/current/5kregistration.pdf or directly at Meramec Vineyards. Registration the day of the event will cost $46.
