  • The Rolla Fit Girls and Teens Run Rolla held their last run of the season at Lions Club Park Wednesday, June 26. Both running groups are part of the Rolla Multisport Club whose mission is to provide training support and encouragement to members while promoting health, fitness and community involvement.
JoAnne Steineman heads up the coaching staff for the Fit Girls who range in age from 9 to 12. Their program consisted of six weeks of non-competitive runs designed to gradually build strength and endurance for the 5K run Wednesday.
"The program teaches girls exercise can be fun. It gets them off the couch and gets them running," Steineman told the Rolla Daily News.
It was the first running season for 10-year-old Abby Housewright. Her mom, Hannah, joined her on the fun run as did a number of other parents. Hannah was quite impressed with Abby's dedication and how well she picked up on the fitness workouts. Abby noted that making new friends was an added bonus.
Fifteen-year-old Lilly Germeroth and Tina McEacher, both members of Teens Run Rolla also enjoyed the running and the fellowship.
They really enjoyed their coach Kate McDonald who is no stranger to fitness.
McDonald has run a number of marathons and is getting ready for an Ironman Triathalon.
"She was an awesome coach," said McEacher. "She put us on a good training program."
McDonald had equal praise for her girls.
"They did great," she shared. "They showed up each week with great dedication."
