  • Hall of fame coach passes away

  • Billy Key, a longtime head basketball coach and athletic director at the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology), passed away Friday, June 28, 2013, at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. He was 88 years old.

  • Billy Key, a longtime head basketball coach and athletic director at the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology), passed away Friday, June 28, 2013, at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. He was 88 years old.
    Key became head coach of the university’s basketball team in 1964 and then took over as athletics director in 1968 replacing Gale Bullman. He retired from coaching after the 1986-87 season with the most coaching wins in university’s history. He later retired from the athletic director position in 1991.
    Outside of university athletics, Key was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rolla for many years.
    Key is survived by his wife, Naomi; one daughter, Carolyn Fore and her husband Jack of Rolla; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
    A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at First Baptist Church in Rolla.
    A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, at the church with interment to follow at the Pilot Knob Cemetery in rural Rolla.
    Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Rolla or the Billy Key Athletic Scholarship Fund at Missouri S&T.
    Null and Son Funeral Home of Rolla is handling arrangements.
