  • A team of students from Missouri University of Science and Technology finished third out of 80 entries in Formula SAE West, a national student design and racing contest sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
The Missouri S&T Formula SAE Team designed and built its Formula One-style racer over the last year and raced it against entries from other international collegiate teams during the competition, held June 19-22 in Lincoln, Neb.
The team finished in third place overall, behind teams from the University of Washington and Auburn University.
Among individual events, S&T finished first in the autocross event, second in the skid pad and third in endurance. More than 60 of the 80 original entries competed in the event.
The Missouri S&T team builds a new car for each year's competition.
"Once people join the team, they are usually hooked and stay for the rest of their university career," said team leader Lance Kellner, a junior in mechanical engineering from Cainsville. "We attract all majors; everybody likes race cars."
"I can't emphasize enough how strong this team has been over the last five to 10 years, and how they turn heads at every competition they enter," said Dr. Hank Pernicka, an associate professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering at S&T and the Formula SAE team adviser.
The following students are part of the Formula SAE team:
Alexander Brinley, a junior in mechanical engineering from Marionville,
