  • It didn't take long before Engine 34, the newest fire truck for the City of Rolla Fire and Rescue, was put into action.  The $455,000 fire truck made its first call early Monday responding to a propane issue on North Walnut Street. Monday afternoon, it responded to a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 44, east of Rolla.
The 2013 Pierce and Pell Pumper was being tested by the fire department Monday afternoon at the Rolla Lions Club Fire Training Facility.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Ron Smith, the truck is ready to join the fleet.
The truck was ordered in January from Pierce Manufacturing based in Appleton, Wis. Smith explained that Pierce builds about 500 to 600 trucks a year. According to Smith, putting a fire truck together is not much different than ordering or buying a car.
"We went up to Appleton three times to inspect it and a final inspection took place just a few weeks ago. We wanted to make sure it was built to our specifications. It was about a six-month process from start to finish," said Smith.
He noted that the engine will replace a 2003 fire truck that will be placed in reserve status at fire station No. 2.
"We designed it to be a basic top of the line brand and built for our use in the City of Rolla to protect our citizens," the assistant chief told the Rolla Daily News.
Capt. Mike Beucler, of the department, couldn't be happier with the new engine that will become the department's front line truck. That is, it will be the truck that will go to all calls.
"So far it's pretty nice," said Beucler, a 14-year veteran.
The fire department will continue training with the new engine this week.
