An 83-year-old Rolla woman died from injuries she received from a car crash at 10th Street and Forum Drive in Rolla Monday night, according to the Rolla Police Department.
A press release from the department states that Marjorie M. Sterling was pronounced dead after she was transported to Phelps County Regional Medical Center by Phelps County Ambulance. Her next of kin were notified.
Rolla police were dispatched to the crash scene around 9:10 p.m. June 24. Rolla police said Sterling was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Impala southbound on Forum Drive and making a left turn from Forum Drive onto 10th Street when her vehicle was struck by a 2004 Hyundai Elantra driven by Megan N. James, 22, of Rolla, that was traveling northbound on Forum Drive toward 10th Street.
A passenger in the James' vehicle suffered a laceration to the right side of her head. She was transported to PCRMC, treated and later released.
James suffered minor injuries but was not transported, according to Capt. Jason Smith, of the RPD.
"We don't think anyone ran a red light," Smith said, but added that the investigation is continuing and that fault has not been determined. The RPD and Missouri State Highway Patrol are investigating.
The Hyundai sustained major front-end damage and front driver side damage, and both air bags were deployed.
The Chevrolet had major front-end damage and the front air bag was deployed.
Assisting the RPD at the crash scene were City of Rolla Fire and Rescue, Phelps County Ambulance, MSHP and the Phelps County coroner's office.
