  • The Newburg School Board voted to extend School Superintendent John Westerman's contract for another two years from July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2015, during their June 20 meeting. It will mark Westerman's fifth year in the district.
He noted that he is glad to be of service.
"I think the district and I have been good for one another," he said. "This is my wife's hometown and alma mater and we both have relatives and many ties to the community. So, we're happy to be able to make a contribution."
Board members also extended the 2012-13 school year budget until next month when they will adopt the 2013-14 school year budget.
Russ Mudd, principal of Newburg Elementary addressed the board about allowing out-of-district students to attend Newburg preschool.
He noted that the school would first take care of Newburg students.
If any openings in a pre-K class came about, then there could be a possibility of an out-of-district student enrolling. A fee would apply in those cases.
Bids were accepted for bread, milk, propane, dieseland banking for the 2013-14 school year. Flowers Foods was awarded the bread contract.
Hiland Dairy was awarded the dairy contract and Citizens Bank of Newburg won the banking contract. MFA Oil was awarded the bid for propane. No bids were presented for diesel.
Of note, the school district's aging phone system was struck three times by lightning earlier this spring. A plan to look into replacing the entire system versus repairing the old system was talked about.
Finally a solution to resolving an ongoing water leakage problem as it relates to rain was discussed.
All board members agreed that this should be taken care of before the start of the new school year in August.
