Sevilla Jean Swenson Bass Dean passed away at her home in Scottsdale, AZ, June 13, 2013. A loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother she leaves a legacy of generations that will carry on her zest for life and her love and devotion to family and friends. She was born to Wesley Theodore and Edna Faye Swenson on May 25, 1927 and was raised in Akron, Ohio.
She graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri with an Associate of Arts degree. It was here she met her future husband, Billy Jack Bass, a pre-med student at the University of Missouri. After receiving his doctorate of medicine from Washington University in St. Louis, they returned to Dr. Bass’ hometown, Salem, Mo., where she helped him establish a general medical practice and raise a family of six children. Dr. & Mrs. Bass donated the land for the Salem Memorial Hospital and established the Seville Nursing Home in 1976 to meet a community need to care for the elderly.
After the untimely death of Dr. Bass in 1975, she was united in marriage, a year later to her second husband, Walter J. Dean, a mining engineer at the Amex lead mines. It was with this union that she acquired five stepsons, expanding her family to eleven children. She soon enjoyed becoming a grandmother for a total of 10 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren and years later 4 step-great grandchildren.
She resided in Salem until 1996 and then chose to retire in Scottsdale, AZ, where some of her children had relocated. She greatly enjoyed her golden years mostly by entertaining her family and friends at her home in Scottsdale.
