Last week the Rolla Public Library partnered with the Missouri Geological Survey and Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to provide programming for families and youth at the library as part of the library’s summer reading program, “Dig Into Reading.”
The theme for the week of June 3 was Digging for Hidden Treasure and had events for everyone.
On Monday, June 3, geologist Vicki Voigt and Hylan Beydler, information officer with the Division of Geology and Land Survey of Rolla, provided a program appealing to all rock hounds called Minerals in Everyday Life.
Participants learned that a cellphone contains several minerals among other interesting facts. Attendees also had the opportunity to view and handle items containing minerals.
On Thursday, June 6, families were invited to attend the Rock Road Show. Geologist Neil Elfrink was on hand to identify rock and mineral samples that families brought from home.
Families had the opportunity to create their own rock collecting boxes made from pizza boxes donated by Pizza Hut and Pizza Inn.
Rock samples provided by the Missouri Geological Survey and DNR were available for families to add to their collection.
Door prizes awarded were collections of Missouri rocks and minerals donated by the Missouri Geological Survey and DNR.
