  • The Ozark Patriots Chapter, Missouri Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (MOSSAR), met Saturday, June 8, at the Rolla Cemetery maintenance shed on Olive Street to view a headstone cleaning and transcription demonstration by local historian Garrett Gabel.
Gabel is also commander of the Brigadier General Edmund T. Wingo Camp of Sons of Confederate Veterans. Gabel and the Wingo Camp have won awards for documenting and placing the most Confederate veteran grave markers in 2012.
Gabel himself is eligible to join MOSSAR since he is the fifth great-grandson of Sgt./Spy John Pentecost Jackson (1725-17??), 2nd Regiment of the Continental Line, 8 Nov 1776 – 8 Nov 1779 in Augusta County, Va.
Jackson received a land bounty of 200 acres for his Revolutionary War Service in 1784. His father, Francis Jackson, a volunteer in Capt. Lewis’ Company of Colonial Virginia Militia was wounded in the back by the enemy at Fort Dinwiddie, Augusta County, Va., in May of 1764 and received a pension for life, being unable to support himself.
In addition to the demonstration, Gabel may be able to provide the Ozark Patriots Chapter, MOSSAR, with leads on Revolutionary War graves in this area. Both the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution have programs honoring graves of Revolutionary War soldiers.
One resource already available to the Ozark Patriots Chapter for this purpose is “Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Missouri” (Houts, H., 1966). However, the Ozark Patriots Chapter, MOSSAR, is always looking for new research sources and new members for its programs.
