  • Fireworks displays will be visible at Missouri University of Science and Technology's Experimental Mine located on Bridge School Road in southeast Rolla this Friday, June 14, and next Friday, June 21.
The public is welcome to visit the mine and watch the displays, which will be held at approximately 8:45 p.m. those days.
Parking is available in the upper lot, though the mine administrators ask the public to avoid parking near the railroad tracks close to the lot.
The fireworks displays, which will be lit at the mine, are part of Missouri S&T's Explosives Camp for high school juniors and seniors.
Dr. Paul Worsey, mining engineering professor and explosives expert, will supervise the displays.
The Missouri S&T Experimental Mine consists of an underground mine, adjacent quarry and classrooms and labs. There, Missouri S&T students in mining engineering and other disciplines gain practical experience in surveying methods and practice, mine ventilation, rock mechanics measurements, geological mapping, mine equipment power systems, groundwater testing, drilling and blasting practice, and mine safety and health.
University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri S&T) became the first university in the nation to offer a minor in explosives engineering (through its mining engineering program) in 2005.
The university now offers a master's degree in explosives engineering as well.
