  • Mayor William S. Jenks III will be the speaker at Monday morning’s annual Memorial Day service.
Rolla area residents are invited and encouraged to attend the 10 a.m. ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, 575 Southview Drive. The park can be found off Highway 72 behind Casey’s.
The Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the service and receives much organizational help from the South Central Regional Veterans Group.
“We’re going to have a typical Memorial Day service and this year it will be under the new pavilion,” said Jerry Bumpus, chairman of the veterans group.
Bumpus said the program will begin with his welcoming remarks and introductions. He will turn it over to Master of Ceremonies Eric Goser, a retired Army officer who is active in veterans organizations in this area.
In addition to the speech by the mayor, the program will include a color guard, invocation, pledge of allegiance and a presentation of memorial wreaths by representatives of area organizations.
The end of the program typically is an emotionally moving experience for those who show up to honor the memories of those who have given their lives in service to the nation, for it includes a rifle salute and the playing of taps.
“And we’re adding something new this year,” Bumpus said. “The national anthem will be sung. We have had many suggestions over the years that we add that, and this year we have a singer.”
For many years, the chamber hosted two services, one at the Rolla Cemetery and one at Ozark Memorial Gardens, a private cemetery.
A few years ago, as the Veterans Memorial Park development began under the direction of the veterans group, the services were combined into one at the new park.
“This worked out very well,” Bumpus said.
The chamber suggests that participants bring seating. There will be some chairs set up at the pavilion, but likely not enough for all.
