Missouri S&T's Kaylea Smith picked up another postseason honor on Wednesday as she was named to the Capital One Academic All-American second team for Division II Softball. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Smith, an architectural engineering major with a 3.77 GPA, earned first team all-district honors each of the last two seasons to go along with her second team honors this year. She was a first team All-GLVC West selection and earned first team All-Midwest Region honors for both the Daktronics and National Fastpitch Coaches Association teams.
She led the Lady Miners in batting average (.385), doubles (10), home runs (9) and runs batted in (32). She batted .377 with runners on base and was even better with runners in scoring position hitting .412. Smith had a slugging percentage of. 725 and had an on-base percentage of .432. She caught all but 17 defensive innings this season throwing out 12 runners trying to steal and picking off four others. She committed only four errors in 200 chances.
Smith is the 45th Missouri S&T student-athlete to be named Academic All-America since 2000, the fifth highest among any institution in NCAA Division II since 2000.
Missouri S&T has had 69 Academic All-America selections in the history of the program. The team is selected by the sports information directors in NCAA Division II.
S&T finished the 2013 season with a record of 13-25 overall, 12-20 in the GLVC.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
