  • The Senior Companion Program hosted its 37th annual recognition dinner for its volunteers Thursday May 16, at Oak Meadows Country Club.
Director Jan Boatright made a special presentation to award longtime volunteer Avenell Richards for 25 years of service as a volunteer in the Senior Companion Program. She was given a special engraved clock and a bouquet of flowers.
Richards is from the St James area and has served in homes as well as in institutions. Boatright applauded Richards for her 25 years of service, her willingness to accept assignments wherever needed and her great attitude toward serving in the program which helps the community.
Following the presentation of awards, District Two Phelps County Commissioner Gary Hicks drew names of volunteers to receive door prizes. Golden Pothos plants were given to 20 of the 70 volunteers.
Blossom Basket Florist in Rolla provided the door prizes and plants used as decorations as well as the bouquet given to Richards.
Celebrations Catering provided the lunch for the volunteers and guests.
Presiding Commissioner Randy Verkamp welcomed the volunteers and announced the awards. Hicks provided the invocation.
The Senior Companion Program is sponsored by the Phelps County Commission, the Corporation for National and Community Service as well as several local groups and individuals. Senior companions help their peers maintain independence and to provide respite to caregivers taking care of a family member.
